What Makes a Quilt a Quilt?
Have you ever had a comforter where big lumps develop along the edge or between the rows of stitching?
That happens when the filler shifts between the top and back of the comforter. Regular stitching over the surface of a quilt stops this from happening.
Blankets, Quilts, and Comforters, what is the difference?!
A quilt always has 3 layers with stitching holding them together. There is always a top, a middle (batting), and a back. It is necessary to stitch through the three layers across the entire quilt so that the layers do not shift as it is being used.
Bed-size quilts require a lot of fabric to maneuver around a traditional-size sewing machine to add the quilting. There are special large machines that glide over a frame the width of a quilt to stitch the layers together efficiently.
While the computer does the stitching for me, I enjoy choosing designs that complement the pieced top or fabric theme of the quilt. When you stop by this year at our new location, take time to look at the quilting stitches and find the hidden patterns in the quilts on display!
A long-arm machine is great for quilting large quilts efficiently, I also use my standard sewing machine for more detailed work and for smaller items. You may see me working on these items in my in-store studio when you visit.
