Happy New Year!
A new year always brings lots of opportunities and a new color to inspire us.
Each year Pantone releases a Color of the Year, one they feel fits the culture and moment of the coming year. Colors can help us articulate emotions and stir up feelings inside us. Pastels are often calming while bright bold colors give us energy when we see them.
For 2023 the color of the year is Viva Magenta, a shade of cochineal red.

“We chose this color because we felt that it was an unconventional shade for an unconventional time, something that could present us with a new vision,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, tells TIME.
Of course, with any color I think about how I might use this color in a quilt or project. Viva Magenta is a loud bold color. It will easily overpower other colors and patterns if I don’t use it well. A small amount will let itself be seen in a quilt and still be felt in the final piece.
I see using this color as an accent color in projects to give them a pop. I plan to use this set of fabric to make a table runner. The magenta print with a variety of intensities will let me use a bit more of it. Stay tuned for a reveal later this winter.

Viva Magenta is a strong color creating strong opinions about it, do you love it or hate it?
